Flower Remedies

FLOWER REMEDIES ARE AN ALTERNATIVE OR COMPLEMENTARY TREATMENT THAT IS USED FOR EMOTIONAL PROBLEMS AND PAIN. THEY'RE MADE OUT OF WATERED-DOWN EXTRACTS FROM THE FLOWERS OF WILD PLANTS. EDWARD BACH, A MEDICAL DOCTOR AND HOMEOPATH, CREATED THESE REMEDIES IN THE EARLY 1900S.

liquid extracts used to address profound issues of emotional well-being, soul development, and mind-body health.

They are part of an emerging field of subtle energy medicine.

Edward Bach was born in 1886, and died in 1936. He was a medical doctor and researcher (bacteriologist), who became dissatisfied with the medical orthodoxy of his time. He developed his own system of treating illness based on the healing properties of flowers.

As it still stands today, the medical orthodoxy then too, held that germs or viruses cause disease. Bach became convinced from his research as a bacteriologist as well as from the practical clinical experience he gained from seeing patients, that germs would not gain a foothold and grow in the body unless the ground had been prepared first.

Bach realised that the ‘ground’ was largely prepared by the mind. If a person was balanced, optimistic, outgoing and positive in life, then the vital energies that created that person would flow unhindered, creating vital good health.

THIS IS NOT HEALTH, WHICH IS A MERE ABSENCE OF PAIN AND A BODY THAT FUNCTIONS, BUT A VIBRANT OVERFLOWING GOOD HEALTH.

If on the other hand the person was pessimistic, insular and negative, these mental and emotional states would inhibit or block the flow of vital energy. This would create stagnant areas in the body, which would become depleted so that they would be ideal breeding grounds for bacteria thereby enabling them to gain a foothold, and break down the tissues causing disease.

These observations and beliefs fit perfectly with the holistic view of health, which is that all aspects of each individual’s personality, psyche and emotional state have consequences at the physical level. Many scientists are now beginning to accept that the energy patterns of the universe are somehow connected with our life force patterns, and that all energy emanates from one original source.

Throughout our being, are repeating patterns – they repeat throughout the physical body – eyes, ears, face, hands, feet, even our cells, but they also interpenetrate the layers of our emotional, psychological and spiritual being.

When distortions occur within a layer of energy, the pattern is distorted, then what we would recognise as a negative pattern is allowed to dominate. This will alter the individual’s ability to follow their true path and achieve their full potential. The remedies enable the energy system to re-pattern, by introducing it to a positive pattern, which stimulates the distortions and damage to be transformed, rebalanced and harmonised.

During the decades that have passed since Dr Bach made his discoveries, most of the people who have used the remedies have used them for self-help.

Sometimes self-help means a straightforward application of a single remedy. At other times it means dealing with quite complex problems that require many different mixes of remedy.

From time to time people using the remedies get stuck, and when that happens they have the option to go to see a professional practitioner. This might be someone who is using the remedies as one of many therapeutic approaches, or someone who specialises entirely in Dr Bach’s system.

People often use the remedies to complement other treatments. The Bach system doesn’t target physical symptoms directly. It focuses on the emotional and spiritual state of the person. Because it works on a different level, the Bach system doesn’t interfere with other modalities, whether orthodox or alternative.

Complementary health professionals in many different disciplines frequently offer Bach remedies as a helpful addition to their main therapy.

SOMEONE WHO IS GIVING AROMATHERAPY MASSAGES MIGHT ADD ONE OR MORE REMEDIES TO THE MASSAGE OIL.

More and more orthodox medical practitioners – particularly people who have daily hands-on contact with patients, such as midwives, nurses and general practitioners – also see the benefits of using the remedies alongside their drug or technology-based approaches.

Patients find comfort in having something to hand that they can take as often as they need. The remedies help treat the underlying causes of stress while the physical fallout is eased using more direct intervention. This kind of complementary use of the Bach system works well in the vast majority of cases.

The remedies are non-toxic and will not react or interfere with other medicines. The only possible contraindications are to do with the fact that the concentrated stock remedies are usually preserved in alcohol. Even here, the amount of alcohol in a dose can be reduced to near zero if we dilute the remedies before use.
