Lady Lavender (and all the surprising ways you can use her)

Lavender has long been considered the premier of all essential oils - or, colloquially, the "Swiss Army Knife" of herbs.

These statements certainly do justice to this potent and powerful herb, and as a beginner and advanced oil user alike, lavender essential oil should be a "must have" in your essential oil collection because of its wide range of therapeutic properties and applications.

Lavender essential oil also has wound healing properties that make it an excellent application in all cases of external injuries, promoting healing, while the antiseptic properties disinfect the area.

Research into the therapeutic benefits of lavender essential oil indicates anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties which can be used in the following cases:

  • Arthritis, rheumatism, muscular aches, and pains, and can alleviate aches, pains, and swelling, and even headaches.

  • It is soothing when applied to insect bites or stings, and is an excellent application for the treatment of burns - just apply a small amount of this essential oil neat (undiluted) to the burn area for relief and to promote healing.

  • As a room spray, lavender essential oil kills airborne germs.

  • As a beauty aid, lavender essential oil balances out the production of sebum from the oil glands, making its application (usually diluted in a carrier oil like rosehip oil) beneficial for oily and/or dry skin - especially in the case of psoriasis, acne, eczema, seborrhoea and spots. It also has powerful cell-rejuvenating properties, making it a staple of any anti-ageing beauty routine. It also works well for the face making it great for face steams.

It is wonderful as a body mist, hair rinse, for full body-foot-hand bathing, massage and compresses. It can be applied by diffusion, atomizers, and inhalation.

  • Lavender is also reported to alleviate motion sickness.

  • It can also be used for household cleaning.

  • Preventing early labor - Gently apply 1-3 drops of Lavender on stomach or heart area to help stop preterm labor contractions (dilute in coconut oil if your skin is sensitive)

Lavender essential oil is ideal for physical and emotional support, and as a whole is an ‘adaptogenic’ essence with a relationship to all body systems.

Emotionally, lavender essential oil helps support a calm composure and self-expression. It reduces irritability, insomnia, nightmares, apprehension, panic attacks combined with uncontrollable shaking, stress, nervous tension, hysteria and is generally balancing to the psyche, as well as the body.

Lavender essential oil is well known for its harmonising and balancing effect on the emotions, making it ideal for stressful situations or to help restore calm.  It is the most popular oil used for burnout and overwhelm as it is a soothing oil that can help to calm the mind and relax the body.

It is also helpful for insomnia and fatigue.
