How to (really) recover from burnout (with Essential oils)

This is a class, dedicated to the high achievers in our community, who keep pushing themselves to the brink of burnout - thinking it’s normal.

You’ve entered into the cycle of Feast and famine… pushing yourself to reach a certain goal and falling into a heap only to recover months later, and do it all again.

This time together is for you.

My intention is to open your mind to not only using plant medicine to comfort and support yourself, but also, very importantly, to see and experience new ways of living.

Ways that have you making good decisions, feeling great, and living a life that is full of magnificent surprises.

And although this may sound like I’m talking about living in a dreamworld, I’m not.

before you ask if it’s possible - YES IT IS, and I’m living proof.

Firstly I want to qualify myself in speaking about this topic from an experiential POV, and then also from helping other women through my coaching and mentoring programs. I’m not going to spend any time retelling my story to you. You can read that on my website, and through the many stories I’ve told on my social channels. What I am going to share with you, are ways to support yourself through whatever it is you’re experiencing, and come out the other side of challenges and tough times, intact.

I’ve been teaching these methods to women from all over the world.

Of course I won’t be running through ALL the methods, but I want to touch on simple and effective aromatherapy suggestions in particular, to support you when you’re healing your mind, your body and your emotions from burnout.  These are the exact blends and recipes I used, and I’m thrilled to be able to share them with you too.

For those who choose to purchase the oils mentioned in the class, I’ll also be sharing these recipes in a beautiful PDF format, as well as provide you furthering education to ensure you not only use these products, but also, more importantly, support yourself to heal.

But first, let’s identify a few key concepts, understanding what is burnout, how to notice it in your life, and what the consequences are both personally, and also from a statistical and a commercial perspective too.

Burnout happens when you're overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and unable to keep up with life's incessant demands. The condition isn't medically diagnosed. But that doesn’t mean for  one second, that it’s not evident as a physical manifestation. But burnout can affect your physical and mental health if you don't acknowledge or treat it.

It can be a Highly practiced > multi generational / belief structure, which means that The more awareness we have of it, the more willingness to move through it, the more we can actually experience healing from it, which will lead to epic changes.

Burnout is when a person reaches a state of total mental, physical and emotional exhaustion and it has some similar signs and symptoms to a nervous breakdown

It can be accompanied by physical symptoms such as headaches, nausea, and sleeping difficulties

Burnout reduces productivity and saps your energy, leaving you feeling increasingly helpless, hopeless, cynical, and resentful. Eventually, you may feel like you have nothing more to give. The negative effects of burnout spill over into every area of life—including your home, work, and social life.

It is important to recognise and treat burnout early, and with coaching (and or counselling), along with essential oil support, most people begin to feel better and recover quickly.

You may be more susceptible to burnout if you:

  • have a heavy workload and work long hours.

  • struggle with work-life balance.

  • You work in a helping profession, such as health care, teaching, coaching or the healing arts.

  • You feel you have little or no control over your work.

Millennials are the most burned-out generation, with 59% experiencing some symptoms of burnout. Gen Zers burn out much faster than any other generation: they went from 47 to 58% in just a year.

Commercially this has a huge impact on our business’ and the economy.

Let’s start with some stats to highlight how an undiagnosable issue, can have such a big affect on the workforce.

In Australia:

Research shows Australian workers report the world's highest levels of burnout. One third of employers report more than 20 per cent staff turnover in the last 12 months.

(Reported in December 2022)

Europe:

According to Mind.org, the total cost of poor mental health to employers across Europe is between €378-€469 billion a year;

That’s approximately AUD $560 - $695 BILLION PER YEAR

This estimate includes costs related to absence from the workplace, productivity losses related to working whilst sick (which is termed ‘presenteeism’) and staff turnover. You would think that by showing up to work, regardless of how you’re feeling - is a good thing right?  Well it turns out, not so much.

Working whilst sick / Presenteeism is the most significant cost driver accounting for around two-thirds of costs.

This is when people make mistakes, bad decisions and then try to cover it up for fear of being fired, reprimanded or even ‘just’ shamed.

Globally:

Employee burnout is a global concern. In a survey of over 1000 respondents by Deloitte, 77% say they have experienced burnout at their current job. 91% say that unmanageable stress or frustration impacts the quality of their work, and 83% say burnout can negatively impact personal relationships.  Burned-out employees are over 50% more likely to seek a new job.

Let’s bring it closer to home. To you.

Answer me this:

How many mistakes do you make, when you’re not at your best?

What are these mistakes costing you?

Now granted, when you’re in a state of overwhelm and burnout, you’re probably not even aware of the mistake you’re making.

So let’s look at the cost of the mistakes, and not only the cost financially, and from a time perspective, but also from an opportunity cost.

Just to clarify what OPPORTUNITY COST means: the loss of other alternatives when one alternative is chosen.

So as a simple example:  you spend time and money going to watch a movie, you cannot spend that time at home reading a book, and you can't spend the money on something else.

These mistakes are costly, and sometimes not only financially, but also from a time-perspective.

Several factors have further increased mental health-related presenteeism in the workplace since the start of the COVID-19 crisis, including significant changes to the way of working, uncertain job prospects and increased financial strain, which we are seeing more and more of as the year goes by.

Think about the parents who were juggling the house-work, home-schooling, cooking, cleaning, whilst not having any time for themselves.

Think about the employees who are trying to keep their jobs, and going above and beyond to ensure that they’re not left in the lurch with a redundancy and no job.

Think about the entrepreneurs who have been trying everything to keep the balls up in the air.

This leads to burnout my friends.

This is the opposite of EMPOWERMENT.

This is a symptom of people feeling disempowered, overwhelmed, and like they’re drowning in a sea of expectations, musts, shoulds and have to’s.

Not only at work, but in their personal lives and relationships too.

Working, pushing, striving and hustling, when your body needs to rest.

Burnout is a state of complete mental, physical, and emotional exhaustion

If you are experiencing burnout, you may notice it is difficult to engage in activities you normally find meaningful. You may no longer care about the things that are important to you or experience an increasing sense of hopelessness.

Many people use the terms wellness and wellbeing interchangeably.

Wellbeing (as opposed to wellness) refers to a state of physiological and mental health. It is a state in which individuals realise their potential, are fully engaged at work and in life) and perform at their best.

With wellbeing, individuals can effectively cope with the day-to-day stresses of life.

Now here’s the crazy thing about burnout - if you leave it too long, that’s to say you don’t take care of yourself along the journey that is life. You don’t rest.

You don’t eat nutritious food nor do you move your body - you will suffer the effects of burnout for longer periods of time.

It takes an average time of three months to a year to recover from burnout. How long your burnout lasts will depend on your level of emotional exhaustion and physical fatigue, as well as if you experience any relapses or periods of stagnant recovery.

If left untreated, burnout can become a part of your everyday life and eventually lead to anxiety or depression. You can also begin to experience chronic mental and physical fatigue that prevents you from working. Your job status may be put in jeopardy if you continue on this path.

A professional will take you by the hand and hold you as you recover from your states of hopelessness.

When to seek professional support for burnout:

  • Feel stuck and unable to make the time or find the energy to figure out what might be going on by yourself.

  • Find that suggestions from loved ones or colleagues have not been helpful enough.

  • Know “what to do,” but are having a hard time implementing it.

Perhaps you take on a few of the practices I’m about to suggest, you’re consistent with them, and you do the DO, but you still don’t feel any different nor do you see any improvement, then my friend, it’s time to seek help.
